Lesson 3: The world of wine
Welcome to our third and final lesson on wine. In this lesson we will explore the world of wine, discovering the most important wine-producing countries, appellations of controlled and guaranteed origin, and the world’s most famous wines.
Wine is produced all over the world, but some countries are particularly famous for their wine production. These countries include Italy, France, Spain, the United States, Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand. Each country has its own specificities and typical wine productions.
In Europe, Controlled and Guaranteed Denominations of Origin (DOCG) and Controlled Designations of Origin (AOC) are used to guarantee the quality of wine. These designations indicate the geographical origin of the wine and its compliance with specific production rules. For example, Barolo, a red wine produced in Piedmont, Italy, is a DOCG, which means it must be produced according to specific rules, including that it must be made only from Nebbiolo grapes and must be aged for at least 3 years.
Among the world’s most famous wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. These wines are produced in many parts of the world and are prized for their unique organoleptic characteristics.
Finally, it is important to mention the factors that influence the taste of wine, including terroir, climate, grape variety, and production method. Terroir refers to the characteristics of the soil and environment in which the grapes are grown, while climate affects the ripening of the grapes. In addition, the variety of grapes used and the method of production, such as fermentation and aging, greatly influence the taste of the wine.
